Why Visiting A Gynaecologist Is Becoming More Common For Older Women

Dave Sutton

For a long time, there has been a misconception that visiting a gynaecologist is mainly something for younger women. The truth is that many of the conditions and issues treated by most gynaecologists affect primarily older women. Often this misconception comes from the idea that a gynaecologist's main role is to help women get pregnant, and while that certainly is the case in some instances, that ignores a lot of the day-to-day work a gynaecologist will do. Here are three common conditions that affect older women that your gynaecologist can help you fix.

Incontinence

Incontinence can be a very embarrassing problem to try and fix on your own, and many companies advertise solutions like absorbent underwear liners and so on. While these certainly help keep the problem under wraps, they do not fix the root cause, which is something your gynaecologist can help you with. From surgical options to exercises and other treatments, your gynaecologist will let you know exactly what paths you can take and advise you on which route is best for your particular situation. Don't live with this constantly hanging over your head; start enjoying your trips out and about without fear of incontinence.

Menopause

Visiting a gynaecologist during menopause is recommended by most healthcare professionals. There are many symptoms that come with the onset of menopause, including dry skin, hot flushes and vaginal pain. If you start feeling any of these symptoms and are uncomfortable in your day-to-day life then you should be seeking medical help from your gynaecologist. They will help guide you through this journey and make sure everything is going according to plan. They can also prescribe pain relief or other appropriate medications to help you cope.

Infections

Just like incontinence, many women feel embarrassed about vaginal infections and therefore do not go and seek treatment from their gynaecologist or even their GP. Vaginal infections can be particularly nasty if left untreated or if treated with the wrong, over-the-counter medication. You should be looking to get targeted treatment for your particular infection so that it clears up as soon as possible and does not spread to other parts of your body. For older women, these infections can be even more serious and threatening to your health. Gynaecologists are discreet and very professional, and most people wonder why they were embarrassed to go to them after they have been.

About Me
Glenda's Guide to Gynecology

Gynaecology can seem like a pretty embarrassing subject. However, when I had a problem and my doctor referred me to my local gynaecology unit, I soon learnt that being embarrassed is silly when you are dealing with medical professionals. The doctors and nurses at my local OBGYN centre were really great and they explained what they were doing with each step of the treatment. I have now made a full recovery and I'm doing really well. I hope that by writing about my experiences, I can help other people who have an appointment with their local OBGYN clinic or hospital.
